Why is the Jubilee in June?

This marks the date in 1952 when Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, died unexpectedly,  6th, February 1952, when then Princess Elizabeth was just 25. While this therefore meant that she became Queen, the event was met with a period of mourning, so her coronation didn’t come until over a year later, in June 1953.

The Queen’s coronation nevertheless took place on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey in London. The major Platinum Jubilee celebrations will therefore begin on Thursday, June 2, 2022, and will continue over the weekend until June 5.
